Puggle Pups
Where to Buy Puggle Pups
Puggle pups are popular designer dogs that are popular with everyone from the girl next door to some of Hollywood’s biggest stars. A cross between a pug and a beagle, these adorable dogs make great pets that do not require much grooming and are relatively easy to train.
Puggle pups have the charming wrinkles of a pug, but the nose is not flat. For this reason the breathing problems that often haunt pugs are not an issue with this breed.
Once you have decided to add this pet to your family, you will need to set about the task of finding a reputable breeder. The first instinct for many is to look on the internet. This can be the best place to find a breeder, but it can also be the worst.
Many people run what are commonly known as “puppy mills”. A puppy mill is an operation where breeder dogs are forced to crank out litter after litter. Often, the breeder dog never even sees the outside of her cage. She is kept in deplorable conditions until she is no longer useful at which time she is killed.
The puppies are also kept in less than ideal conditions. The men and women who operate these puppy mills will advertise any way that they can, and the internet is an easy way to find them. You’d never guess you were dealing with a puppy mill by reading their cheerful sounding ads and reading all of the promises they make.
Often, they use terms like “Amish raised” or “family owned”. These phrases are intended to provide an air of legitimacy. Often, there are even photos included showing the dogs romping on acres of land, surrounded by adoring caretakers.
Unfortunately, the pictures painted by such ads are not always the truth. The only way to know for sure that you are getting your Puggle pups from a reputable breeder is to know what to look for during your search.
Here are some tips.
Visit in Person
Never buy a Puggle pup, or any other dog, without visiting the breeder in person. That is the ONLY way you can know for sure with whom you are dealing. No reputable breeder will have a problem with such a request. In fact, they will insist on meeting you before allowing you to purchase one of their dogs.
During the visit, make sure the areas in which the dogs are kept are clean and that there is fresh food and water provided. Also, see if the dogs, both puppies and adults, seem happy. If they seem timid, aggressive or in any way fearful, that is a bad sign.
Ask for Medical Records
A good breeder is going to be happy to offer you the medical records not only for the puppy you may purchase, but for the parents as well. If he cannot or will not show you the records, take your business elsewhere.
Also, call the vet that he uses and ask for a reference.
Ask to See the Parents
During your visit to the breeder, ask to see the parents. They should be happy and well -adjusted. They should not appear to thin, weak or afraid of people.
Adopt
Of course, if you adopt, you will know for sure that you’re not supporting a puppy mill, and you’ll have the added benefit of knowing that you’re saving a life. Most breeds have their own rescue groups which can usually be located by visiting the website for the American Kennel Club.
Puggle pups make wonderful additions to your family. Make sure that you buy one from a reputable breeder so that you will know you are not supporting the horrible business of puppy mills.
